Guide
Set up a welcome email sequence
Turn brand-new subscribers into customers with a 3-email automated welcome flow.
Open your email tool's Automations tab
In Mailchimp: Automations → Classic Automations → Welcome new subscribers. In ConvertKit, Beehiiv, Klaviyo, or MailerLite the flow is very similar, look for 'Automation' or 'Sequence'.
Set the trigger: signup to your main list
The automation should start whenever someone joins your main audience/list. Delay: send Email 1 immediately, don't wait.
Email 1, Deliver the promise (send immediately)
Subject: 'Welcome! Here's your [thing]'. Deliver whatever you promised at signup (checklist, discount code, free chapter). Keep it short, one link, one job. If they signed up for a discount, put the code in giant text.
Email 2, Tell your story (24 hours later)
Subject: 'Why we started [brand]'. Send a plain-text-looking email from the founder. 200–300 words. Why the business exists, who it's for, one personal detail. This is the highest-converting email in most sequences.
Email 3, Show social proof + soft pitch (Day 4)
Subject: 'What customers are saying about [product]'. Include 2–3 real testimonials, a product photo, and a soft CTA (browse the store, book a call). Not a hard sell, a gentle invitation.
Add a fourth email if you offer a discount
Day 7: 'A little thank-you'. A time-limited discount code (10–15%) valid for 48 hours. Urgency + a specific offer typically converts 3–5% of the sequence.
Turn it on and check weekly
Publish the automation and let it run. Every Monday for the first month, check the open rates and click rates in the reports. If email 2 has under 30% opens, the subject line is the problem, rewrite it.
That’s the whole thing.
